And at that time, the treatment was-- I had a choice of one month in full leg casts, so I'd be at home bedridden, or 3 months with no activity, so I'd get a ride to the front door of school and I'd have to walk in, I'd have to eat my lunch in the classroom, I couldn't even go with my classmates to the cafeteria. And when that three months was over and they gave me the go-ahead, I started running everywhere, and it probably was not true, but all my friends said I was so much faster and all this stuff. So I decided in ninth grade, we we're doing the phy-ed testing, and I bet one of my friends I would beat him in the 600 yard run, and I ran it and then he ran it. He ran faster than I did. so I asked the teacher if I could do it again, and he looked at me like I was crazy, but I said, I'm serious. And he said okay, and then I beat him. And I remember going to the state meet and watching our team run and one of the lead runners took a wrong turn from another team, and several of my teammates followed him. We ended up getting disqualified even though we would have won it and it was a matter of like two feet, so that was disappointing. But I just remember that, and always-- later on, when I'm coaching, remember to emphasize to my athletes: know where you're going and follow the rules and pay attention and that stuff won't happen. Also probably my biggest memory in track was I had an arch rival from Appleton East and my dad-- again, like I said, he was not really a sports guy. But he came-- the first and only meet he came to-- and I had never beaten this guy. I was always close, but I had never beaten him and I dove at the finish line and beat him, but it was a cinder track back then too. So my knees are all bloody, my hands are bloody, I think one of my shoulders-- and I came up to my dad and I was all excited and he goes, \"What in the hell did you do that for?\" So I was like, well, kind of for you, Dad. Tom Jensen, my cross country coach, who is still running and he hangs around at the Neenah cross country meets all the time, I usually see him once a year-- still involved in it. He was just at the time, just starting out as a coach. He was a little bit overweight. We've won conference, but honestly, I don't know how many times. It's been a lot-- more than half the times. But that isn't what I do it for. The cool part is, like I said, when they get confidence and improve. Some of the best memories are of kids that-- excuse me-- weren't the top. Like Sarah Jirovec-- not sure if she's in here, but she should be in-- a girls' basketball player, tall, over six feet, in not a cross country body. She wanted to get in better shape, so she came out for cross country, and she ended up getting a full ride at Wisconsin. Part of the reason that her coach at Wisconsin, basketball coach, gave her the scholarship said, if anybody your size is willing to go out and work and hustle and run cross country, great for you. The couple other girls, and again these aren't the stars-- Alanna Jirschele. Again, not an athlete at all, way back in the-- I don't think she was our slowest runner, but she was closer. And at that, time we had lots of people, but her goal, whatever the distance we were running, she would always run it. She wasn't doing it fast, but her goal-- we'd wait out in front of school and usually high five girls as they came in, but she'd run by everybody and slap the door. That was her way of saying she finished. And then I've had a bunch of girls that still contact-- \"Oh, I just ran a marathon, I heard your voice while I was running. Or I set a new PR.\" A lot of great athletes like Susanne Martineau, the Iron Man Triathlon, set a age group record and I think it's still there-- I'm not positive though for a mass race. I have another runner, Sarah Wagner, who had a terrible injury in high school. She was going to a sectional basketball game to watch it in Marshfield, and by the storage tanks, 'cause that's where Highway 10 was then, it was foggy and she rear- ended a stopped semi and broke her femur and her kneecap in five places and they didn't think she would even walk normal again, but she has won the Trans Rockies, she's like a trail runner, and she even came back for her senior year. That happened when she was a junior. She even came back for her senior year and was able to run. She's that phenomenal and that focused. There's just so many of them. It's on display upstairs, I believe. Our track team, the 4x800 meter relay, we were at sectionals. That's the qualifying meet for state. And we won by, I think, like 16 seconds. And then I have an official come up to me and says, your relay team's being disqualified because they're wearing an illegal bra. At the time, the rule said that if you wore a Victoria's Secret bra, you could wear that. You could have leopard, it could be whatever. But if you wore a sports bra, it had to be a single solid color. And she had a white sports bra with black piping on it that was probably a half an inch, if that, 3/8 inch, on the shoulders. And well, apparently, I was screaming. Pat Leahy, one of the boys' coaches, had to subdue me because I was going nuts. And the parents ended up getting a lawyer and Good Morning America was on their way to Point when the WIAA finally relented and said, okay, they can compete. And we didn't want the other-- they had let another team in. We didn't want them to not participate, fine, we didn't care. And I was so proud of the girls, because we ended up placing fourth at the state meet and the press was like, well, what do you want to say to the WIAA? And they could have been all bitter, and they said, we want to really thank them for the opportunity to compete and we really appreciate it. So they didn't badmouth anybody and it was a super deal. And then I was on the coach's advisory committee through the WIAA at that time, so in the summer we have a meeting and I was in there all ready to go, and Marcy Thurwachter was just hired as the new track coordinator, among other sports, but she was in charge of track. And I walked in, and she said, before anybody gets up on their soap box, that rule is gone. We realized it was dumb. It was actually a National Federation rule. But they throw a pie in my my face or do stuff like that, put chocolate syrup on my head. That's always-- and it used to be they'd have to chase me for a long time 'cause I always did the workouts with the girls till about 2010 somewhere in there. But then my knees just got too bad, so I ride the bike now. But just the the fun things besides the competing. And the look on the girls' faces when they do something they didn't think they could do. I had one girl-- we always talk about the finish of their cross country races. It's preached to them-- you have to do a triple excel. At about 800 meters out, you pick up the pace and you're just looking for people that are hurting. And to me, I always tell them that's the most important one. And then about a quarter mile out, you pick it up again, you're doing a relaxed sprint, and then the last 200 meters, you got to go as fast as you can. So I preach that all the time. I preach that all the time. And one girl, in particular, we were at Antigo, and it's snowing out and it's cold as heck, but finished the race and she's crying. And I'm like, what's wrong? And she goes, I did my triple excel for the first time and it worked! She's telling me how many people she beat and those things. But really, I just try to get them to believe in themselves and be proud of what they do. That's my student objectives for woodworking. The number one goal I had is to have a sense of pride in the work that they do and that comes from my dad. He always said, if you're going to do something, do it right or don't do it at all. If you give it your best shot, and then that's all you can do is your best.
