It was Sheila's first taste of competition and she loved it. At Wausau High School, there were track meets for both boys and girls. There was no boys' section and girls' section. She just wanted to beat the boys and the boys wanted to beat her. She was talented at running and sprinting, and with some more training could have been even better at a younger age. I had wanted to be in athletics since I was young. Because of my dad, it was an easy choice. Teaching and coaching are very similar. When I coached at UWSP, I started doing 75% academics and 25% coaching. I had a lot on my plate. My classes were on methods and fundamentals of physical education. I had to prep for those classes and also soccer. I had long days-- getting home at 10 PM and then having classes at 8 AM. Back in the '70s, a physical education degree required a minor in coaching or health education or recreation. My first job was in Texas, my second was in Milwaukee, and then I moved to Whitewater. I was required to coach. In the '70s, if you were a physical education teacher, you didn't get a job unless you were willing to coach up to three sports. Now, people are coaching that are not physical education teachers. This change happened in the '90s. I didn't have a choice. When I was in Milwaukee, I coached track and field and I was the assistant gymnastics coach. We had to learn how to play, but everyone was playing kickball soccer. There wasn't a lot of finesse and fundamentals other than the foreign countries, so everyone was starting together. We were one of the first schools to go varsity with the WWIAC in 1987. There was no conference or state tournament. In '88, there was a state tournament. The brochure ranked all the teams in the state, like Marquette and Green Bay, and Stevens Point was ranked last. We were third place. The next two years, we were first place, and then the year after that we were runner up. We were going against good competition, even though some of those teams were club and some were varsity, still some good athletes were coming out of there. My greatest achievement is working with a great group of young women who put it all out there. They worked so hard. Lots of other wonderful people worked with me to get this program to national recognition. I didn't do it on my own. You need a lot of people to make it go. You need a supportive athletic director, like Frank O'Brien and Don Amiot. Having fun with the sport-- it's all about those great memories. I don't think any awards stand out. If you bring it all together, it's nice to be recognized, but it's overwhelming. You want to bring everyone else up on the podium and say how much they helped you. It's hard. I'm a little humbled by it all. Even doing and seeing this, this is an achievement of everyone together for 50 years, helping women become more competitive and making opportunities. Those things were starting to happen, and maybe I didn't realize about Title IX, but at the beginning there was an incredible amount of disrespect and by my senior year, there was a lot of respect. Some of it was that they didn't think girls were capable of doing what boys did. I don't want to get into those negative stories, but it turned around. I can remember, in the '70s, the first mile that was run. I was at the state track meet and there was a standing ovation for Kim, from Parkside. She was a marathon runner.
