We played slow pitch softball and that was really kind of the opportunity you had until 14 when you would go to high school and join-- the summer had a softball fast pitch when you turned 14. When they got older and they started-- they went to the Catholic schools, they were playing basketball, and my son was playing football and they were doing the sports through the Catholic school system. So I didn't see too much difference compared to the public schools. I think it just always worked out and they provided opportunity for the kids and so we were able to take advantage of that. I don't think they had a program until 1986, and so looking back, I mean it's kind of shocking to me that girls couldn't do that until 1986. I think this exhibit and  just hearing more about Title IX, it's shocking to me looking back that when I was 11 was when girls could play that sport in high school. And so that's shocking to me. They got by, they band together and they went to see the athletic director and they made it happen. So I think that that's one piece that I look at. But we always had this thing that was our thing, that was softball and that was our thing that we look back on. I mean, my oldest daughter played softball through her junior year of high school, and I think I took my knowledge to try to help any team that they played on. So we coached my oldest daughter on a team together. I taught her how to be a pitcher and she was a very successful pitcher, but her love was basketball. And so people are always like, don't you care that they're not playing softball or continue on, and to me, they're doing what they love and then that's that's their dream. I lived mine and I didn't need them to go down the same path that I went on. So I think athletics just taught me that it's got to be  your love. Our softball team, in high school we had several college coaches tell us that they've never seen a team play as well as they've played. And so they've got just as much talent and capabilities as a guy does. And so I've always enjoyed it and I also feel like the the girls can-- I don't know how the difference is, but they I always found that they could pick up fairly decent. We never overstressed in practice, we always maybe did 10-15 minutes of a practice each day. We came back and maybe did some of the same drills, and all of a sudden they were picking it up better. And so we just felt, I think they work hard, I think they're they're dedicated, and one of the things I'm really proud of is that they've enjoyed the game. And we had eight girls at one time playing college ball after they left Pacelli. And then by the last two years that I coached, we were beating them. And I think the challenge is just-- one of the things I've seen as with coaching is we we stole from everybody. We would see a certain team doing something really well, and we'd go and find out what they did. I did that all the time and so with all those things, we make adjustments and we added it to our program, and we found it if it worked we used it, and if it didn't work, we moved on. But I always got a kick out of some coaches. Once in a while we'd just mention stuff we were doing and it didn't seem to phase them at all and we stole from everybody. And so I think that has always carried on with Pacelli, and they've had several state championships after ours, so I think we were sort of the stepping stone and helped to keep that tradition maybe alive. They won last year-- Pacelli took the state championship. So I think we had a little part in that. And the station work only normally goes 10-15 minutes and we move on to the next station and he observed all that during the hour and a half practice that we had and he understood what his daughter was saying. He was impressed at the fact that the kids were always-- I hate kids standing around in sports. To me that's the biggest waste of time. So we never wasted time. I had a whistle. We went 10 minutes, I blow the whistle, we go to the next station. The only time we stood around was when there was some basic instruction they have to give, but very seldom did we stand around. I mean, the last 50 years it's come a long way, and I think some of the things that went on with her class and with her group added to it in many ways. And I said, well, what if you start winning ball games? You'll get the attention and when we did, we got a lot of good articles in the paper and all of a sudden it was a lot different. So and then she went on and got a scholarship at UW-Parkside, so it worked out perfect.
