They were all big linemen on the football team. So I honestly scooped up all that athleticism. I played everything at a young age. Passed on Wisconsin, they were a little late on the jump. I don't think they gave me as much love or interest as I thought I deserved, so Minnesota was on me from the jump, sophomore year they were already saying, we're looking at you, good luck, play well, continue to have interest in us. So at the time, I did not need an agent. I just signed the contract because there was no negotiating at that point. It was what it is and you don't need somebody else. So my thought was, I'm not going to pay somebody else to just get me the contract. I sign anyhow. In a way it was bad because I didn't get any shoe endorsements or any endorsements from any big clubs or any organizations that would normally scoop up a number one, number two pick. So I think I was one of the only few number one picks who never got a deal. I will jump forward a couple years. When I went to New York there was a shoe company out of China called Peak. So everybody on the team went back into a draft that each team then randomly picked who they wanted. So I ended up, two years after I went number one, I only went number three on my team in the dispersal draft. So I could have got to Minnesota 'cause they had the number one pick, but they did not take me. So I was a little sour about that. Went to New York and in the third pick there and had a breakout-- not career but time-- time frame in New York, a stint we'll call it. I was the most improved player of the year. That year I started on the bench and came in as a sixth man. By halfway through the year I was starter, and then on the way to pull away from most improved player of the year in the WNBA, I'd say in 2007-8 maybe, and then spent four or five years with New York. And that was a cool experience, very much so, because got to play in Madison Square Garden, got to be with the Knicks. Then I was in Italy playing in a championship game on Saturday and the WNBA season started, I think, on Monday. New York, who had just got a new coach wanted me there Sunday night and I told them that was impossible, I was still in Europe. We just won, I'm in the best shape of my life, I just got Italian MVP, and I needed time to go home, unpack, repack, see my family, and then I would come. And they told me they were going to fine me $1,000 a day. And again, I'm making 70,000 at that point. I'm going to be gone seven days. That's a tenth of my paycheck. You're not fining me that. So I told them if they fine me a dollar I was not coming. And they got the fine down to $300, and I told them, I'm not coming. So then I sat out from the WNBA for 2 years. That coach got fired. Bill got hired. I was in Europe. Bill flew over, asked me if I wanted to come back. I told him no, I'm the worst number one pick in the history of the WNBA. And then he asked if I want to be traded, and I said yes. So he said there was a situation with New York or Minnesota that there could be a three-way trade between New York, Minnesota, and I think Tulsa or Phoenix, something like that. Next thing I know, Minnesota called, asked if I want to be traded. I said yes and they traded for me. For them over there, it's not necessarily a lifestyle. It can be a hobby. So some of the kids are just there going through school as well. They got separate jobs because the money doesn't pay enough. More money and higher expectation individually there. It gets a lot on a year round, it's a week between seasons. I would play WNBA, have a week, go home, go to Europe for 8 months, maybe come home at Christmas, maybe not. I spent time in Turkey, they're Muslim, no Christmas, so no coming home. They're there for the team and the colors not necessarily anything else. They don't even know basketball, they're just the locals. They cheer for you because that's the hometown team. When you get to Turkey, it's a battle. They are hooligans. There were bombs-- like smoke bombs, flash grenade bombs. They throw sparklers, they throw coins, they throw anything at you possible. So actually, in Turkey, I mean, it's a huge arena. Think small NBA-- maybe 10,000 seat arena. They separate the fans into one section and then they have 10 rows that are empty of fans but full of police. So there's three rows of police, straight up and down, separating the fans so they can't get to each other. But in that, they throw things back and forth. A few boos, you can laugh that off and shrug it off, when people over there are threatening your life because you're playing against their team, you know it's a little bit different. It is definitely different. When I was in Italy, I'll give you a story here. I blocked somebody to almost win the game, game saving block type thing. There's still time on the clock. I celebrated it, looked to the stands, shushed them. A fan jumped over the stands and started coming to the court. So then again, I got a couple older brothers. We wrestled. We fought. So then, eight months out of the year, I wouldn't even collect a check if that was the case. So you have to go overseas to continue making that money, but on the same aspect of it, is you go over there to keep your game tight and improve because then you're playing year round. You're not off for eight months, you don't have to hire a personal trainer you don't have to struggle to get up to go to the gym. I mean, it's your job now, so if if you learned how to handle it, it was good for you. But again, not everybody could. You're a young kid in college, you have coaches who are on you to do these things and show up to class and show up. And when you become a professional that just stops instantly and you are required or expected to just naturally do it and if you don't get extra shots up, you're not doing enough. If you just show up to games and practice, you're not doing enough. And then you know that it shows, so you don't get your money or you don't raise the contract or you don't go up to a better team. And it happened to a couple people, where they just were complacent and a higher rank than me in a way, but fell because I worked harder consistently, was seen by the right people, went up, up, and up. So again to start, I was on a low level team in Slovakia, not a lot of money. Second year, I loved it so much I went back. He paid more money. So there's no charter because some teams can't afford it. Europe, if you can afford it, you do what you want to do. So there's a team in Russia that has almost a $15 million budget. They have their own jet, they fly to games. It is a 4 hour time change to go from Moscow to Yekaterinburg, and it's a 4 hour flight on top of it, so you're losing eight hours of your day. So we were without a league for a while before the WNBA came in-- I think it was the ABA or something, I honestly don't remember. But back then, the men deserved the money. They were playing well. There's only one import and you are paid very well, but you are asked to perform. And by perform, I mean if you don't average 40 and 20, you are underperforming in their mind for what they're paying you. So I had a little rift with the coach because I'm a pass first kind of person. I think I still averaged 20 and 10, with about five assists and it wasn't enough. So I informed them that I was not going back to Minnesota. They were not happy about that, but it's a business and I had to do what's best for me. They have no problem cutting you or getting rid of you when it serves them right. So it's a business at the end of the day. Me not going to Minnesota allowed them to build a super team where they brought in Sylvia Fowles, who was a superstar in her own right in the post-- I think the all-time leading rebounder in the history of the WNBA. And they were still mad at me for not coming back. And I said, you are welcome, actually, because I helped build that super squad and they won a championship that year. So again, I said you're welcome, then I'm going overseas in the WNBA offseason. And then they asked if I was interested to come back in 2016 and I said yes. So I went back to the WNBA in Minnesota as a backup to Sylvia Fowles now, which I took that role perfectly. I said, okay, I will challenge her in practice every day. I will raise the level. I thought I did a very good job. I didn't get a lot of playing time. I was a great teammate, very encouraging, there for the right reasons. I'm there to win a championship now. I'm not there to get playing time, not there to pad my stats-- whatever I need to do to win, I will do. If that's in practice, that's in practice. So I took my role very seriously. Unfortunately, got hurt, wasn't able to play as much and that season at the end, we lost the finals in game five. I wasn't able to play and the exit interview did not go very smooth with coach. She really kind of destroyed me after that year in 2016, and I thought I was going to be done. So when the season ended for us in, I think, August, I did not have a team lined up. I didn't want to go to Europe. I was done. I kind of felt like I hit depression. I was low for about 2 or 3 months. And a team in Sweden had talked to me and I'd always said I wanted to retire and play in Sweden at some point in my career, because one of my college teammates was from Sweden, talked about it, loved it, and just the lifestyle. So I was like yeah, I could always retire in Stockholm and just play there. So this club with the coach that I had talked to asked me if I would come play. And again, I was making good money in China the year before at high five figure a month. And I went to Sweden to make low four figures for the year. At that point, it wasn't about the money. It was about my mental health and recovery because I didn't feel like the person I once was or could be simply because of basketball. So anyhow, I fought that mentally draining situation to go to Sweden and I fell back in love with it. So in 2018 in January, I decided to give it a go again and it went well. It went well. I played the next five years in Sweden for two different teams. In Stockholm, I helped that first year-- I helped take a team from Division 2 up to the Division One League and played the second year in the Division One. Then that team did not want to play in the division anymore. They wanted to go back down, it was too high. I wanted to play in the highest level, so the next team in Stockholm asked me if I would come there. Went there, decided to try to take on a coaching role, so I played and coached a 14-year-old team of girls and that was where I kind of started to think maybe coaching could be a next step for me. And that happened for the next three years. That fourth year, which would have been 2022, I think, '21, '22, '23, they all kind of run together now, I was player on the women's team, assistant coach on the women's team and assistant coach on the men's team as well. So I had really kind of stepped my game up, did a lot in the aspect of coaching taking steps forward. And I went from that year again, 2022, the coach got fired at Christmas and I wasn't playing great. My back wasn't great. So the club asked me if I was interested in taking over as head coach. So I went from player assistant to player head coach and still assistant on the men's. I took the team from eighth place up into fourth place, without me as a player only as a coach. Awesome stuff, club liked it. Didn't ask me back the next year, so then I came back to Point without an idea to go back, because again, my body wasn't feeling it. I think as a youth athlete I got one pair a year, and every year I got a new pair and one pair only. So as I grew in status, I think the shoe collection just naturally grew. I had my own signature shoe one year with Peak, a company out of China, and that was pretty cool because again, like I said, I was a number one pick and I never had a Nike or Reebok, Adidas deal back then. So finally to get that was very cool. I saved those shoes because my name was on them, my logos were on them. I felt like that was a big deal. My favorite pair of shoes is in this case-- well there's two favorite pairs, I would say. Most seasons we always had a pink game for breast cancer awareness. My mother passed from colon cancer, so I just kind of piggyback to the breast cancer situation. Always wrote her name, in memory of, and that was always nice. I always like to get that out. But one of my most favorite pairs of shoes was the orange pair that we wore in the WNBA finals. And that was the year we won it. It was just kind of contrasting to the uniform. I'd got them from Maya Moore because she didn't want to wear them, so I got a pair of Maya Moore's shoes and rocked those to win a WNBA Championship. Yes, I would say I probably have a couple hundred pairs of basketball shoes and definitely a couple hundred pairs of non basketball shoes. So the collection is up there, but with that being said, I also kept every single jersey I ever played in because at some point I want to have a memorabilia wall in my new home with all my sports memorabilia and that's kind of why I decided to start saving shoes. I'll keep it PG for you. Let me think of the date. I think this would have been 2009. So in 2009, I was playing in Russia and it was a very prominent club. They had won three, we'll call them European World Championships at that time, with a very prominent Russian KGB ex-spy who was the owner. He was exiled from three countries. He could not enter the UK, he could not enter the United States, and he could not enter Israel. He was arrested and imprisoned in Israel for 8 years for espionage as a former KGB spy. He was a very prominent man in Russia and he owned a team called Spartak Moscow. He brought me in, some of the best players in the world. Sue Bird was on the team, Sylvia Fowles was on the team, Diana Taurasi was on the team-- some WNBA legends. And the expectations were to win another European title. In the first month or first weeks, he had taken me out to dinner. I was in the car with him. He had a nice big Mercedes, told me the back was bulletproof, told me he never rode in the back because nobody was stupid enough to try to kill him, and again this is-- I'm a basketball player so hearing this is kind of like, wow, okay, nobody's trying to kill my owner. That's a good thing. And November 2nd rolls around, I think Beyonce was in Moscow to do a concert. I think he helped bring her there. And he was on the way to pick me up, and he never made it. So we're all sitting in in the office waiting for him at his workplace and there was a real odd feeling. The drivers and all the Russian people were starting to walk around and get frantic and the next thing we know, they say he was shot. So we're like, shot? And then we turned the news on and there was video of him being pulled out of the car with 19 bullet holes, bloody, two miles away from picking us up. And again, like I said, it was my birthday. So I assumed I would have been riding with him in his car and that was kind of a shock situation. What could have been if-- one thing about the WNBA is they taught us never to imagine hypotheticals. Don't answer hypotheticals, because it's only hypothetical-- it could go any way. So I did my best to not think of what if, but I will say when my driver drove me home, I was slouched in my seat. You could not see me through the window. I was just scared they were out to get us. So yeah, my owner in Russia was, I'll say assassinated, shot 19 times with two semi-automatic weapons, two miles from picking me up. That was one of the craziest stories. So it was a whirlwind. We were supposed to go to Beyonce, we didn't. We had a service the next day. The next day we were on a flight to Israel, buried him, on a flight home. Game two days later.
