When I was in college here at UWSP, some of my friends played on the men's team and there happened to be two girls who came out-- they were not from around here. One was from out east, I'm not sure where the second one was from. And they said, \"Hey, we have two girls playing on our team. You should come out and bring some friends and start a team. And so, in a roundabout way, we did that. I remember putting up signs in the dorms calling any interested people to come out and play. We didn't have a coach. We practiced with the men's club. Mike Williams was the coach for the men's club at the time, and let us practice with the men. There were very few other women's teams in the state of Wisconsin but we had a core group of players and we traveled to the UP, down to Milwaukee, Madison. We played the Amazons out of Minneapolis-- very few teams at the time. And really, that's where the the team and the league started. So we applied to be a club. It was very informal. I don't remember us having official referees. We had some of the men's club and some of the old boys were our refs at the time, and  that's how I remember it. She was on the softball team. she was on the basketball team, played volleyball for a while, and she said, \"I'd really like to play rugby.\" And so a few of my friends who I played with it at the university, they had daughters about the same age as Rachel around in this area and we said, \"Well, we should start a team and so it was an involved process. I had to get with SPASH and go through the process to become a club at SPASH. Through USA Rugby, you need to be certified as a coach. I've never coached a sport before, so that was a little bit scary. But I was fortunate to have, still head coach Tim Wandtke, help out right from the beginning of the club, and other assistant coaches that we've had throughout the years to really advertise and and start the club. And so people know she's my daughter, but she has her career in her own right-- has been on select sides and all star teams. She was the president of her club at at Northern Michigan University. And so it's something that I can still share with her. Her passion for it, my passion for it. I loved following her team around. And you know, we make plans to go to rugby events, professional and otherwise, just to enjoy the sport together. When I started exploring the club at SPASH, that's when I jumped back in and just remembered how much of a family it is. And now with the Wisconsin Girls High School League, all of the other teams and seeing the players advance past high school-- if they play or not-- but particularly the ones who play. I have kind of a motherly feeling towards them and  just watching them succeed is really amazing. You can have fast runners, slow runners. I'm not particularly fast. Most rugby players hate to run, frankly, but they're running out there for 40 minutes a half and it's just so welcoming. There's a place for you and your talent can be used, whatever it is-- whether you're a fast runner or you're very strong or you've got good hands to pass. And that's why I love it. I've seen so many different players who haven't found a spot on a traditional sports team because they were too short or you know didn't look a certain way. And so that's been really an amazing part of rugby and I think if you talk to any rugby player, you'd hear pretty much the same thing. Just get up and do it better the next time, and move forward and rugby is a lot of the individual player kind of seeing what's happening and working with their teammates to advance the ball. There's some set plays but not a lot. You just look at what's going on and you figure it out and you problem solve and you do that with a family of the other 14 players or six players on the team. And it really is an extended family and I think that's what a lot of the players get out of it. You're creating an atmosphere and a culture that they want their child to be part of and so I think it's been great. We're excited to kind of build on this-- if we have the capacity, start a youth tag rugby team and just really advance it. It would be great if we had a whole league in Central Wisconsin, if Marshfield had a team, if Wausau had a team. That's really exciting and steps forward and we need more of that. For Central Wisconsin, it's another opportunity for these girls. I have several from the high school level who have gone on and gotten scholarships to play elsewhere. We've had a number of players play overseas with teams. The opportunities they have to play around the United States but also overseas and continuing on through college-- they can play in the military. So if we wouldn't have had the team back in 1993, the whole team and everybody who had put forth effort to create the club and to keep the club going, that rippled out several of those players went on to coach other places, and are involved in the sport, still involved in the sport and then actually carried over into the high school team because two of our coaches-- two of the other coaches are UWSP alum from the men's team, two different eras, and one is an alum from UW Eau Claire.
